If you need more than coaching

Her Vanguard is coaching. Some things need a professional, and some things need someone right now. Both lists are below.

Everything here is free and confidential unless noted. Calling more than one is fine. If the first doesn't fit, try the next.

Right now

If you're in immediate danger, call 911.

Suicidal thoughts, or a crisis of any kind 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call or text 988, 24/7. Chat at chat.988lifeline.org. Text and chat are available in Spanish. There's a dedicated line for deaf and hard-of-hearing callers at 988lifeline.org.

Finding a therapist

The cheapest option is first, because money is usually what stops people starting.

  • Open Path Collective — therapy at reduced session rates for people without adequate insurance.
  • Psychology Today — the largest directory, filterable by insurance, speciality, and sliding scale.
  • Inclusive Therapists — centers therapists of color, disabled therapists, and LGBTQ+ affirming care.
  • Therapy for Black Girls — directory and podcast for Black women.
  • 211 — call or text 211 for local help with housing, food, utilities, and childcare. Practical crises are real crises.

Outside the United States

Find A Helpline lists verified crisis lines in more than 175 countries, free, and filtered by what you need. It's the fastest way to reach someone who speaks your language and knows your area.
